Manchester United FC Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson visited Orkney Street Enterprise Centre, Govan to perform the official opening of this iconic Govan building.
Sir Alex had a tour round the former Govan Police station and jail and was joined by a host of Government ministers and local councillors to mark this special occasion.
Orkney Street Enterprise Centre has undergone a £3.5 million transformation and now serves the local community as an Enterprise and Business Centre. The former Victorian jail cells have been transformed into Incubator Units for fledgling businesses and the main building houses a range of services including Glasgow South West Regeneration Agency’s Employability office and Money Matters Advice Centre.
Councillor George Ryan, Sir Alex Ferguson, Councillor Alistair Watson Chair of GSWRA and Tommy Docherty, Deputy Chief Executive with GSWRA.
Tommy Docherty, Deputy Chief Executive, for Glasgow South West Regeneration Agency, stated, ‘We are absolutely delighted to have Sir Alex take time out of his busy schedule to join us at Orkney Street. The site has played a massive role in shaping the local Govan community; serving as the town hall and then latterly as the Fire and Police station. It is fantastic to see the Enterprise Centre open and ready for business. There has been a great deal of time, effort and money spent on converting this iconic building. The overall premise of the site is that it will provide support to the local community, as well as help new businesses in the South West to flourish.’

The Orkney Street Enterprise Centre is home to 6 large offices and 9 unique incubator units that have been specifically designed for start-up businesses. The entire £3.5 million development has been meticulously planned and every detail has been taken care of. There are literally hundreds of original features and loads of quirky details that make Orkney Street very special. The original police cells have become the business start-up incubator units, the old court house, the bar and the police officer’s recreation room now accommodate large, bright office space. There are meeting rooms, conference facilities, hot desking, virtual offices, staffed reception, catering and administration support.
Orkney Street really is a very special place and it is a great place to do business in and around the South West of Glasgow.
