GLASGOW’S Local Regeneration Agencies collected a prestigious award last week from Dragons Den star Peter Jones and Lord Davies, the Minster for Trade, Investment and Small Businesses.
The LRAs were named Scotland’s regional winner in the Enterprising Britain Awards 2009 at a prize-giving ceremony held in Millbank Tower in central London.
The nationwide competition was run by Enterprise UK and the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills to find the most enterprising place in the UK – a location where enterprise has helped transform a community and led to improved economic prospects for the area.
Although they didn’t collect the overall UK prize, which went to Lowestoft in South West England, Glasgow’s LRAs received warm praise from the judges.
The mission of the agencies is to drive Glasgow’s economic regeneration by working in partnership to create, enhance and deliver opportunities for the city’s residents, their communities and enterprises.
The five LRAs covering the entire city of Glasgow which look after enterprise activities, including business start-ups, social economy support for the local community and voluntary organisations, as well as developing and regenerating premises to provide space for local organisations.
In the first nine months of the ‘Enterprise Development’ and ‘Social Economy’ projects, 906 individuals and organisations were assisted and 116 enterprises and 195 jobs have been created.
The Scottish regional award was collected on behalf of all five of the city’s LRAs by Cathy Lang, Glasgow North Regeneration Agency, our own Tommy Docherty and Rob Pryce, Glasgow West Regeneration Agency.
