The community janitor is an employability programme that provides work experience and training for unemployed people for a period of up to 26 weeks. Working with the Local Housing Organisations to tackle environmental neglect the janitors will provide real services to the local community. The janitors work on grass-cutting, landscaping, up-lifting and clearing sites as well as offering maintenance support to older and more vulnerable members of the community.
All members of the work force were unemployed and the Community Janitors programme is their ticket into training, personal development, career guidance and ultimately full-time employment. Each member of the team will learn new skills, build their confidence in the workplace and undergo work based assessments.
To date 53 people have gained full-time employment and the project has secured further funding to carry on the good works being tackled under this project.
